Согласно методологии Агентства по защите окружающей среды США, контроль выбросов диоксида серы и оксидов азота осуществляется по превышению действующих норм с помощью системы непрерывного мониторинга в течение любого трёхчасового периода суток (среднее арифметическое трёх одночасовых периодов) или в течение любого 6-ти минутного периода суток, если усреднённая непрозрачность выбросов превышает действующие нормы на 20 % или на другую величину для соответствующих установок.
